Azelaic Acid 20% Cream

A prescription treatment for acne, rosacea, and uneven skin tone.

What it is

Azelaic acid 20% cream is a prescription medication that kills bacteria, reduces inflammation, unclogs pores, brightens skin tone, and smooths skin texture. It is well-tolerated by most skin types, including sensitive skin, and is safe for long-term use.

How to apply — morning and evening

  1. Wash your face with a mild, gentle cleanser and pat dry
  2. Wait until your skin is completely dry
  3. Apply a thin layer of cream to the affected areas
  4. Gently massage into your skin until absorbed
  5. Wash your hands after applying
  6. Wait for the cream to dry before applying makeup or other products

Important tips:

  • Use twice daily (morning and evening) as prescribed
  • Do not use more than directed — using extra will not make it work faster

Sun protection is essential

Your skin may be more sensitive while using azelaic acid. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) every morning, even on cloudy days. Reapply every 2 hours when outdoors. Wear protective clothing and seek shade when possible.

Sun protection helps prevent new dark spots from forming and protects the improvements you're making with treatment.

What to expect

Timeline for results:

  • Most people see improvement in breakouts within 4 weeks
  • Brightening and fading of dark spots typically becomes noticeable after 8–12 weeks
  • Skin texture improvements continue to develop over several months
  • Full benefits appear after 3–6 months of consistent use
  • Continue using as prescribed even after you see improvement

Common side effects (usually mild and temporary):

  • Tingling, burning, or stinging sensation, especially in the first few weeks
  • Mild itching
  • Dry or flaky skin
  • Slight redness

These effects usually improve as your skin adjusts. They are most common during the first 2–4 weeks.

Benefits of azelaic acid

Treats breakouts: Kills acne-causing bacteria, unclogs pores, reduces inflammation, calms redness from acne or rosacea, and prevents new breakouts from forming.

Brightens and evens skin tone: Fades dark spots left behind by acne, lightens sun damage and age spots, treats melasma and other hyperpigmentation by blocking excess pigment production.

Improves skin texture: Smooths rough and bumpy skin, reduces the appearance of enlarged pores, and promotes gentle exfoliation without harsh peeling.

Gentle yet effective: Well-tolerated by sensitive skin, works as well as other brightening treatments with less irritation, safe for long-term use, and has minimal systemic absorption.
