Understanding Lip Fillers

Lip fillers are injectable treatments that consist of hyaluronic acid, a sugar molecule found in the body that promotes hydration and volume. Hyaluronic acid fillers are designed to add fullness to the lips, diminish fine lines, and improve overall lip symmetry. Our Colorado med spa uses FDA-approved lip fillers, ensuring safe and natural-looking results.

Our aesthetic injectors geek out over the science of hyaluronic acid fillers. Each filler has its unique combination of qualities. Your injector selects the right product for you by looking at your particular needs. Do you want your lips to look more hydrated (like a plumping lip gloss)? Or are you looking for more surface area (height) and plump? Our providers always look at your face as a whole and make sure that lip filler injections will enhance the overall balance and harmony of your face. We always say that we want to keep a face looking like you could find it in nature.

The Consultation Process

Before embarking on any cosmetic procedure, a thorough consultation is essential. At our Colorado Beauty RN, we prioritize understanding our clients needs and desires. During the consultation, our experienced aesthetic injectors will discuss your medical history, assess your facial features, and understand your aesthetic goals. This dialogue allows us to select the most suitable lip filler and tailor a treatment plan to your unique needs.

The Lip Filler Procedure

On the day of your appointment, you'll be warmly welcomed into our comfortable and sanitized treatment rooms. The lip filler procedure itself is relatively quick, typically lasting around 30 minutes. Before the procedure, we use the highest-strength prescription numbing cream on top of your lips. We can also provide a dental block for maximal numbing but find that is rarely necessary. During the treatment, your injector will carefully inject the chosen filler into specific areas of your lips, shaping and augmenting them according to the agreed-upon plan. Our med spa team focuses on creating natural-looking results that complement your unique features. We do not want your lips to walk into the room before you do!

Managing Discomfort

Concerns about discomfort are common among clients considering lip fillers. It's natural to wonder about pain or swelling during and after the procedure. All of the lip fillers we use in our practice have powdered lidocaine added to the filler to make the procedure more comfortable. In addition, our med spa uses advanced techniques, such as topical numbing creams, an optional dental block, ice packs, and distraction tools to minimize discomfort. Most clients report only mild discomfort, and most swelling usually subsides within a few days.

Lip Filler Aftercare

After getting lip fillers, following proper aftercare instructions is crucial for optimal results and minimizing any potential side effects. Here are some essential aftercare tips:

To decrease swelling:

  • Ice 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off as needed.
  • Take a daily antihistamine (Zyrtec/Allegra/Claritin) for 14 days.
  • Take 800mg of ibuprofen every 8 hours (note that ibuprofen will increase the risk of bruising).
  • Avoid vaccines for 2 weeks before and after injections.
  • Apply topical arnica to treatment sites and take oral arnica for a week following injections.
  • Avoid salty foods and vigorous exercise.

To decrease the risk of infection:

  • Avoid touching the injected areas.
  • Use a fresh pillowcase!
  • Wait to apply makeup until the next day (be sure to use clean makeup brushes).
  • Avoid dental cleanings and procedures for 2 weeks after injections.

What’s Normal?

  • Asymmetrical swelling, lumps, bumps, tenderness, and bruising are very normal for 4-6 weeks.

What’s Not Normal?

  • Blisters, traveling bruises, discoloration (skin appears white or gray), and intense pain are not normal. Call the office at 720-504-4236 immediately to be seen. Blood flow may be compromised.

Typical Healing Process for Lip Filler

Days 1-4:
  • Immediately post-treatment, you may notice redness, asymmetrical swelling, tenderness, and numbness from the lidocaine. Lip fillers especially swell a lot and you may look ducky. This will go away in a few days, we promise! Hang in there.

Days 5-14:

  • Recovery time varies depending on each person and the type of filler used. You may still have mild swelling and feel some lumps. By Day 14, the majority of swelling, bruising, and lumpiness should be resolved. You are about 75% of the way to your final results!

Days 15-30:

  • You should be feeling great! People may be asking you if you are getting more rest, using new makeup, or drinking more water. Yep! Sure, am.

Follow-Up Appointment

Approximately four to six weeks after the initial treatment, we encourage you to schedule a follow-up appointment at our Colorado med spa. During this visit, our practitioners will assess the results and make any necessary adjustments to ensure optimal outcomes.
