Pre-Treatment Instructions
To ensure the safest and most effective IPL experience, please follow these steps carefully:
- Avoid Sun Exposure or Artificial Tanning (14 Days Prior)
UV exposure increases the risk of hyperpigmentation and irritation. Protect your skin with daily SPF and avoid tanning beds and self-tanners.
- Discontinue Retinoids & Hydroquinone (5 Days Prior)
These products increase skin sensitivity and the likelihood of adverse reactions. Discontinue use 5 days before your treatment.
- Start Antiviral Medication (If You Get Cold Sores)
If you have a history of herpes simplex (cold sores), take antiviral medication as prescribed the day before treatment to reduce the risk of an outbreak.
- Apply Prescribed Numbing Cream (1 Hour Before Treatment)
Maximize Your Comfort! We strongly recommend that you purchase our in-office topical numbing cream in advance. Apply a thick, even layer to clean skin (without makeup, lotion, or sunscreen) one hour before your appointment, and cover it with plastic wrap if instructed. IPL is fast and effective, but it can feel like a warm snapping sensation. Our medical-grade numbing cream helps take the edge off, making your treatment experience significantly more comfortable.
Clients who pre-numb say it makes a BIG difference! Don’t skip this step.
Post-Treatment Expectations
Your skin may respond in the following normal and temporary ways:
- Redness & Warmth (24–48 Hours)
The treated area may feel like a mild sunburn. This usually resolves within one to two days.
- Darkening of Pigmented Lesions
Freckles, sunspots, or age spots may darken before flaking off within 5 to 10 days. This is commonly referred to as the “coffee ground” effect. Coffee grounds are not a clinical measure of success—some people get them every time, and others don’t. Even if no visible flaking occurs, IPL still works beneath the surface to fade pigment and improve tone. Your settings are carefully selected for your skin type and goals.
- Dryness & Texture Changes
Your skin may feel dry, tight, or slightly rough for several days—this is part of the healing process.
- Mild Swelling
Especially in areas with thin or sensitive skin, which typically resolves within 1 to 2 days.
Post-Treatment Aftercare
Support your healing and protect your results by following these aftercare instructions:
- Sun Protection is Essential
Apply a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ daily, even on cloudy days or indoors. Wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses when outdoors.
- Cool if Needed
A cool compress can soothe lingering heat or redness in the treated area.
- Avoid for at Least 5 Days
These activities may irritate the skin or delay healing:
- Hot showers, baths, or saunas
- Exercise or heavy sweating
- Exfoliating products, retinoids, AHAs/BHAs
- Scrubbing or picking at flaking skin
- Use Gentle Skincare
Stick with non-irritating cleansers and hydrating moisturizers until your skin returns to its normal state. Hydration supports optimal recovery.
