How Does Sculptra Work?

What to Expect:

  • Sculptra works gradually over a series of 1-2 treatments. It takes about 8 weeks after a treatment to see results.
  • The injection with a small needle or cannula (blunt straw) may feel like a light pinching sensation, but is quite comfortable. We use lidocaine (injectable numbing) with the procedure.
  • Swelling and bruising can occur, and may be more likely in certain treatment areas.

  • Frequency of Treatment:

    • Enjoy long-lasting results for 2-5 years.
    • Because we are still aging, most patients receive 1 vial of Sculptra each year after their initial treatment to “top-off” and boost results.

  • Downtime:

    • You may experience redness, tenderness, swelling, and bruising for a few days. Most people are comfortable with their appearance and are happy to leave the clinic and resume normal activities.

Post Care:

  • Massage the treated area for 5 minutes, 5 times a day, for 5 days after the treatment.
  • Immediately following treatment, you may notice mild redness, swelling, pain, and/or bruising.
  • You may take Acetaminophen/Tylenol if you experience any mild tenderness/discomfort.
  • You may apply ice wrapped in a cloth to help reduce swelling.
  • Avoid aerobic and strenuous exercise for the rest of the day to minimize bruising.
  • Do not wear makeup the rest of the day.
  • Wash the area with a gentle cleanser before bed. Use a fresh pillowcase.
  • Remember that a few days after treatment, you may look as you did before your treatment. This is normal because your body has absorbed the sterile water that was injected! Sculptra works to gradually replace lost collagen. Visible results start to appear about 8 weeks after injections.
